What is flush DNS?

When you are using your browser in all operating systems the browser often caches your links to websites. If these links automatically take you to a page that has been saved in the cache you may not get a true representation of the webiste you are looking at i.e. it could be last weeks version.

When Hosts and Web Developers are working with browsers and either transferring or updating a website it is important to know they are looking at the currenct version of the site in its current location on the internet (the IP address).

Supposing website xyz.com is listed on IP address 123.4.5.70 and is then moved to 243.123.23.56 and is changed and updated at the new location. If you run the ipconfig/flushdns command it will 'clean' the cache and force your browser to obtain the new version of the site you are looking at.

This is particularly useful when used with the hosts file in your windows system folder to preview how a site will look once transferred and before the nameservers have been changed or before it has fully resolved. (see KB "ghosting your website")
